Judge Hilton Miller

Federal Admin Law Judge
Judge Hilton R. Miller received a BA degree in political science from Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi, and a JD degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law.  He also studied at DePaul University in Chicago, IL, and Cambridge University in Cambridge, England.  In school, he played the tuba with the famous, “Sounds-of-Dy-NO-Mite” marching band.  In law school, as a second year and third year student, he taught legal research and legal writing to first year law students and was recognized in the Mississippi Law Journal.  He was also the vice-president of his law school student body and passed the bar exam before actually graduating law school.

Judge Miller began his career as an attorney with a law firm specializing in corporate law and complex civil litigation in Jackson, Mississippi.  He served as Assistant City Attorney for the City of Jackson, Mississippi.  At the City Attorney’s Office, Judge Miller wrote regulations and rulings, advised the mayor and city council, and drafted appellate briefs to the State’s Supreme Court; every brief drafted by Judge Miller was decided in the City’s favor during his tenure with the City.

Judge Miller left the City Attorney’s office to become an Assistant District Attorney in his hometown in a three county area, consisting of Pike, Lincoln and Walthall Counties.  Judge Miller successfully tried numerous cases and was asked by the community to run for the office of district attorney.  In 2003, he received 55 percent of votes in the three county area.  He subsequently joined the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office in Atlanta, Georgia.  Judge Miller worked closely with District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr. to prosecute thousands of criminals.  While at the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, Judge Miller was Trial Attorney of the Year in 2008 and Margaret Smith Attorney of the Year in 2006.  Also while prosecuting crime, Judge Miller taught Legal Research, Legal Writing, Torts, Criminal Law, and Wills, Trust, and Estates, as an Adjunct Professor.

In 2009, he joined the United States Department of Social Security, Office of Disability Adjudication and Review, as an Attorney Advisor.  In 2010, he was selected, appointed, and sworn, as a United States Administrative Law Judge; at the age of 33, one of the youngest on record.  On the bench, Judge Miller handles appeals for the government and directly touches the lives of thousands of Americans and disabled individuals in the New York City, New Jersey, and Georgia Areas.  Judge Miller handles one of the highest caseloads in the country, is one of the most upheld on appeal, and has previously served as Chief Judge.

Judge Miller was raised by his grandparents in McComb, MS.  He is a lifelong member of the New Home Church in Magnolia, MS.  He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and the Trial Lawyers Association.  He was featured seven years ago as one of the top 40 under 40.  Judge Miller was honored and humbled to stand with the National Action Network in protesting the killing of Trevon Martin in City Hall Park and everywhere that injustice occurs.
